One Year Since October 7

As we mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic terror attacks of October 7, 2023, we remember the pain and devastation inflicted upon the people of Israel.

The simultaneous wave of coordinated assaults on Israeli civilian communities and military posts in the South by Hamas claimed the lives of some 1,200 individuals, injured more than 4,800 others and resulted in more than 251 being taken hostage to the Gaza Strip.

While the October 7th massacre left deep scars across the nation, and had significant implications for Jewish communities worldwide, the committed atrocities carried out that day were not just an assault on Israel, but on the shared values of democracy, freedom and human dignity.

This year, the Jewish High Holidays – traditionally a time for reflection, renewal and celebration – are marred by the ongoing absence of the hundreds of Israelis who were killed or taken hostage by Hamas during the attacks. Families remain separated, haunted by the uncertainty of their loved ones’ fate.  Up to this day, one year later, the terror organization Hamas still holds 101 hostages in captivity.

Israel’s strength lies in its resilience, but it cannot face these challenges alone. The continued and unwavering support of Israel’s European allies remains crucial in this period of heightened antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment. Europe aspired to be a partner for peace, stability and security in the Middle East. It is essential now, more than ever, that this partnership be reinforced.

We call on European nations to:

  • Reaffirm their commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself in the face of ongoing threats from Iran and its proxies.
  • Advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other terrorist groups.
  • Stand firm against terrorism and against Iran’s nuclear program.

As we commemorate October 7, let us reaffirm our commitment to defending and upholding the principles of democracy, peace and the sanctity of human life that bind Israel and Europe. Let us strive towards a future in which such horrors are never repeated neither in Israel nor in Europe.

The European Leadership Network (ELNET) stands firm in its mission to bolster ties between Europe and Israel, ensuring that our common values and common interests continue to thrive in a world where free nations must, more than ever, stand together.
