ELNET Statement on the Attack Against Israel

On October 7, 2023 Hamas declared war on Israel, launching armed infiltrations into Israeli territory and civilian communities by air, land, and sea, unleashing a barrage of thousands of rockets against civilian targets, and committing outrageous acts of violence, including the murder and kidnapping of civilians, men, and women, young and old, including dozens reportedly taken by force to Gaza, during the holiest period in the Jewish calendar.

This marks one of the most unprecedented and bloody attacks in decades. It is crucial that Europe condemn this historic act of war and support Israel in its efforts to defend its sovereignty and protect its civilian population.

ELNET unreservedly identifies the Islamic Republic of Iran as the sponsor of terrorism in the region. The weapons and support provided by Iran to Hamas enable acts of violence that threaten the stability and security of the entire Middle East. It is imperative that the international community hold Iran accountable for its role in fomenting violence and instability in the region.

ELNET recognizes and thanks the European countries and institutions who have stood by Israel and condemned these acts. These countries include Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, NATO, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom (UK) and the European Commission.

Europe must call upon Hezbollah to exercise restraint and refrain from intervening in a new northern front. Escalation of the conflict would only exacerbate an already precarious situation, further jeopardizing the safety and well-being of civilians in the region.

ELNET encourages and supports European officials in demonstrating solidarity and visiting Israel as a symbol of support and commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

ELNET remains committed to strengthening the Abraham Accords, a historic agreement that has the potential to bring about positive change in the region by fostering diplomatic relations and promoting economic cooperation between Israel and its neighbours.

We hope that European leaders will extend an open invitation to Arab leaders to join them in expressing solidarity and supporting Israel’s right to defend itself against acts of aggression. It is our sincere hope that regional cooperation will play a pivotal role in achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

In the spirit of ensuring responsible aid distribution, ELNET calls for a halt to unconditional aid funds for Gaza. We believe that aid should be contingent on concrete measures and commitments towards peace and stability in the region, while also ensuring transparency and accountability in the disbursement of such funds.

As the premier organization dedicated to strengthening European-Israel relations, ELNET remains steadfast in its dedication to promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in the Middle East. We call upon the international community to unite in condemning acts of violence and terrorism and to work collaboratively towards a peaceful resolution of the current crisis.
